I get calls every day at our senior center from people asking if they can donate a used wheelchair, walker or other mobility device. Donating a used wheelchair is a generous way to help others who may not have the means to afford one. Fortunately, there are a lot of places that will accept a donation. In this article, I will give you options on where to donate used wheelchairs.
Local Organizations and Facilities
I always like to start local since many people would like their wheelchair to help someone in their own community.
Community Centers and Churches – Local community centers and churches often accept wheelchair donations for members of the community. Our senior center has a “medi-closet” where we provide wheelchairs, scooters, canes, walkers, and other devices to people who need them. This is a great place to start.
Goodwill – Goodwill accepts various medical equipment, including wheelchairs, and sells them at affordable prices. You can drop off your wheelchair at a local Goodwill store or donation center. Their website is goodwill.org.
Salvation Army – The Salvation Army accepts medical equipment and provides it to those in need. You can contact your local Salvation Army for donation guidelines and drop-off locations. Their website is salvationarmyusa.org.
Local Hospitals and Clinics – Many hospitals and clinics accept wheelchair donations to use in their facilities or to distribute to patients in need. Call your local hospital or clinic to inquire about their donation process.
National and International Organizations
The Wheelchair Foundation – This international organization delivers wheelchairs to those in need worldwide. Visit their website to find the nearest donation location or to arrange a pickup. You can get more information at wheelchairfoundation.org.
MedShare – MedShare collects and redistributes medical supplies and equipment, including wheelchairs, to hospitals and clinics in need globally. Check their website for drop-off locations or arrange for a pickup. Their website is medshare.org.
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) – DAV provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families. Contact your local DAV chapter to see if they accept wheelchair donations. You can get more information at dav.org.
Hope Haven International Ministries – This organization provides mobility to people with disabilities around the world. Visit their website for donation guidelines and contact information at hopehaven.org.
Online Platforms
Freecycle – Freecycle is a grassroots movement of people giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Post your wheelchair on the Freecycle network in your local area at freecycle.org.
Craigslist – Craigslist has a “Free” section where you can post items you want to give away, including wheelchairs. Go to craigslist.org and create a post in the “Free” section of your local Craigslist site.
Tips for Donating
- Check the Condition: Ensure your wheelchair is in good working condition. Some organizations may have specific requirements for the condition of donated items.
- Clean and Sanitize: Clean the wheelchair thoroughly before donating.
- Contact in Advance: Always contact the organization or facility in advance to confirm they accept wheelchair donations and to get any specific instructions.
By donating your used wheelchair, you can make a significant difference in someone’s life. Whether you choose a national organization, a local facility, or an online platform, your donation will help provide mobility and independence to someone in need.
Let me know in the comment section below if I missed any organizations that accept wheelchair donations.
