This is an extremely personal issue for me and have done a lot of research on this. I started losing my hearing in my 30’s and also suffer from anxiety. The question I’ve always pondered is can anxiety cause hearing loss? I will explore whether anxiety can cause hearing loss and how these two conditions might be interconnected.
Can Anxiety Cause Hearing Loss? The Connection.
Some of the things that could be contributing to your hearing loss include:

- Anxiety can affect how the brain processes sounds. People with high levels of anxiety may experience heightened sensitivity to noise or difficulty concentrating on specific sounds amidst background noise. This condition is sometimes referred to as auditory hypersensitivity.
- Stress Response:
- The body’s stress response to anxiety can lead to physical changes, such as increased muscle tension and restricted blood flow. In extreme cases, these changes might affect the tiny muscles and blood vessels in the ear, potentially leading to temporary hearing issues.
- Tinnitus:
- Tinnitus, the perception of ringing or buzzing in the ears, is often reported by individuals with anxiety. I have had this for 3 decades and I think this creates more anxiety than my hearing loss. The exact cause of tinnitus is not fully understood, but it is believed that anxiety and stress can exacerbate the perception of these sounds.
- Hearing Sensitivity:
- Individuals with anxiety may become more aware of normal bodily sounds, including their heartbeat or breathing, which can be distracting and distressing. This increased awareness can sometimes be misinterpreted as hearing loss.

- Professional Consultation:
- Consulting with an audiologist can help determine if there is an underlying hearing issue that needs to be addressed. Additionally, mental health professionals can provide support in managing anxiety.
- Healthy Lifestyle:
- Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, can improve overall well-being and reduce anxiety symptoms.
